In the case with the residents of 41 West 70th Street, not only did the owner, Dr. Harold Lusskin have a patent, but that patent was in collaboration with his wife and son, all three being orthopedic surgeons. Dr. Harold Lusskin; his wife, Dr. Lillian Lusskin; and their son, Dr. Ralph Lusskin filed for a patent for what they called a Hand Drill while living at 41 West 70th Street. The tool was developed in order to allow the operator the ability to perform surgery using it while freeing up the other hand in order to be able to perform other tasks simultaneously. With the family being orthopedic surgeons, it is most certain that the tool came into use in their own practice. During his lifetime, Harold performed house visits throughout the five boroughs and Ralph eventually became the chief surgeon at Beth Israel.
